UK Publishing Industry Hits Record £7.4 Billion Revenue in 2025 Fueled by Exports and Digital Growth

The United Kingdom's publishing sector has announced a record-breaking year, with total revenues reaching £7.4 billion in 2025. This figure represents a notable increase from the £7.2 billion generated in 2024, signalling a strong and expanding market. The UK Publishers Association (PA) released its "Publishing in 2025" report this week, highlighting key drivers behind the industry's success.

Export Markets Drive Unprecedented Revenue Growth

A significant contributor to the record revenue was the burgeoning export market, which saw a 4% increase in 2025, reaching a total of £4.7 billion. This export growth outpaced domestic sales, underscoring the global appeal and influence of UK publishing. The export market now accounts for a substantial 64% of the industry's overall revenue. Major markets for UK publishers include the United States, Australia, and Germany, demonstrating the international reach of British literary and academic works. Dan Conway, CEO of the Publishers Association, emphasized the role of publishing as a "cultural ambassador for the U.K.," sharing education, information, culture, and ideas globally.

Digital Transformation and Audiobook Boom

Digital revenues also played a crucial role in the industry's record-setting performance, growing by 7% in 2025 to £3.6 billion. A standout performer within the digital sector was digital audio, which now constitutes 10% of the consumer publishing market. This surge in audiobook consumption reflects a broader shift in how consumers engage with literary content. In contrast, print sales, while still substantial at £3.8 billion, remained relatively flat for the year, indicating a continuing trend towards digital formats.

Domestic Market Shows Steady, Sector-Specific Growth

Domestically, the UK consumer publishing market experienced a 3% growth in 2025, reaching £2.6 billion. This growth was largely attributed to strong sales within the fiction sector, which saw an 8% increase, and children's titles, which rose by 7%. However, the nonfiction category experienced a 3% decline. The academic publishing sector also demonstrated resilience, posting a 5% growth across both books and journals. Conversely, the education sector faced challenges, with a reported decrease of 4% for the year.

The PA report's findings paint a positive picture for the UK publishing industry, showcasing its ability to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and market dynamics. The continued strength in export markets and the rapid expansion of digital offerings, particularly audiobooks, suggest a promising future for publishers navigating the contemporary media landscape. The industry's diverse output, from popular fiction to academic journals, continues to demonstrate its global influence and economic significance.
