Samsung SDI and Mercedes-Benz have finalized a substantial multi-year contract that will see the South Korean battery giant supply high-performance electric vehicle batteries to the German luxury carmaker. This marks a significant milestone, representing Samsung SDI's inaugural supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz, according to reports from The Korea Herald and The Economic Times. The batteries will feature a high-nickel NCM (nickel, cobalt, and manganese) chemistry, designed to deliver enhanced energy density, extended driving range, improved lifespan, and robust power output, along with Samsung SDI's proprietary safety technologies.
Mercedes-Benz plans to integrate these advanced batteries into its future lineup of compact and mid-size electric SUVs and coupe models, bolstering its strategy to expand its next-generation EV offerings. This partnership is expected to not only strengthen Samsung SDI's position in the global EV market but also ensure Mercedes-Benz a stable supply of critical high-performance battery technology, a key component in its electrification strategy. The agreement underscores the growing trend of major automakers securing long-term battery supply chains amidst intensifying competition in the electric vehicle sector.
Beyond the immediate supply agreement, both companies have indicated plans to broaden their strategic cooperation. This includes potential joint development of next-generation battery technologies and exploring other future mobility solutions. The deal, signed in Seoul and attended by key executives from both companies, including Samsung SDI President and CEO Choi Joo-sun and Mercedes-Benz Group CTO Jorg Burzer, is poised to significantly boost Samsung SDI's revenue and factory utilization. For Mercedes-Benz, this collaboration diversifies its battery sourcing and reinforces its commitment to a swift and stable electrification transition, adding Samsung SDI to its existing network of Korean battery suppliers like LG Energy Solution and SK On, as reported by The Korea Herald.
