India's economy has kicked off the new fiscal year with significant momentum, showcasing resilience amidst global geopolitical tensions. April 2026 witnessed record Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections, reaching ₹2.43 lakh crore, an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period last year. This surge in revenue indicates strong domestic consumption and compliance, according to reports from The Economic Times.
Adding to the positive economic indicators, passenger car sales experienced a substantial jump of 25% in April, with 445,417 units sold domestically, a significant rise from 356,113 units in April 2025. Digital transactions via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) also saw a considerable increase of 25% year-on-year, with a total value of ₹29 lakh crore processed. These figures collectively suggest a robust and expanding consumer market, seemingly unfazed by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra, speaking at the 25th FIMMDA-PDAI Annual Conference in Amsterdam, highlighted India's consistent position as one of the fastest-growing major economies. He emphasized that while the economy has shown remarkable resilience, future growth hinges on deepening liquidity, broadening market participation, and strengthening market infrastructure. Malhotra noted that India's economy grew at an average of 8.2% between 2021-2025, with projections of 7.6% for 2025-26 and 6.9% for 2026-27. Inflation has remained within the RBI's tolerance band, and fiscal consolidation efforts are progressing. The banking and NBFC sectors have strengthened their balance sheets, and foreign exchange reserves are robust, covering 11 months of imports, with gross FDI expected to rise to approximately USD 90 billion in 2025-26.
In other news, political developments continue to unfold. The Supreme Court of India granted anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case involving allegations against the Assam Chief Minister's wife. The court observed that the allegations appeared politically motivated, underscoring the importance of personal liberty and constitutional democracy.
Meanwhile, the nation also marked Narada Jayanti on May 2nd, a day dedicated to devotion, music, and spiritual knowledge. The country also celebrated various cultural events and festivals throughout the month, reflecting its rich diversity.
