Indian Airlines Slash Flights Amid Rising Fuel Costs and Softening Demand; IRCTC Launches New Budget Pilgrimage Tours

India's major airlines, IndiGo and Air India, are significantly cutting domestic flight schedules for the upcoming summer months due to escalating Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices and a noticeable dip in travel demand. Concurrently, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced new budget-friendly 'Bharat Gaurav' train tours, offering affordable packages for spiritual and heritage journeys across the country.

The Indian aviation sector is bracing for a turbulent summer as major carriers, IndiGo and Air India, announce substantial reductions in their domestic flight operations. These cuts, totaling approximately 250 flights daily, are slated to commence in June and extend through August, a period traditionally marked by increased travel for summer vacations.

Aviation Fuel Prices and Demand Dip Force Capacity Cuts

The primary drivers behind this significant capacity reduction are the soaring prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and a perceived softening in travel demand. ATF prices have reportedly surged by around 25% for domestic operations, a substantial increase that directly impacts airline operating costs. This surge, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, has compelled airlines to rationalize their schedules to mitigate financial strain. IndiGo, India's largest private carrier, is trimming its domestic capacity by 5-7%, translating to approximately 110 fewer flights daily. Air India, along with its subsidiary Air India Express, is implementing a more drastic cut of about 22% of its domestic schedule, amounting to roughly 110 fewer flights for Air India and an additional 240 flights for Air India Express daily. These adjustments are expected to lead to fewer flight options and potentially higher airfares for consumers during the peak summer travel season.

Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru are identified as the most affected aviation hubs, with numerous key routes experiencing reduced frequencies. For instance, flights from Mumbai to Jaipur, Goa, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Patna, and Bhopal will see reductions. Similarly, travel from Delhi to Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kochi, and Kolkata will be impacted. Bengaluru, a major southern hub, will also experience a considerable brunt of these rationalizations.

IndiGo's Chief Financial Officer, Gaurav Negi, stated during the carrier's full-year earnings call that the airline is recalibrating parts of its network and fleet deployment. "As part of this selective recalibration, calibration of certain routes is warranted to protect margin," Negi explained. This optimization will involve reducing the usage of older-generation aircraft and returning certain narrowbody damp-leased aircraft that are naturally more expensive to operate. IndiGo reported a net loss of โ‚น2,536.9 crore for the March quarter, a stark contrast to a profit of โ‚น3,067.5 crore in the year-ago period, citing challenging operating conditions and foreign-exchange fluctuations as key factors.

IRCTC Unveils Budget-Friendly 'Bharat Gaurav' Pilgrimage and Heritage Tours

In a contrasting development for budget-conscious travelers, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched a series of new 'Bharat Gaurav' tourist train packages for June and July 2026. These all-inclusive tours are designed to offer an affordable way to explore prominent pilgrimage destinations and heritage landmarks across India and even Nepal. The packages are priced starting from an accessible Rs 15,600 onwards.

These 'Bharat Gaurav' trains are part of Indian Railways' initiative to promote theme-based tourism, bundling rail journeys with accommodation, guided sightseeing, meals, local transfers, and travel insurance. Among the newly announced tours is the 'Ayodhya Kashi Punya Kshetra Yatra With Baidyanath Dham', a 10-day tour starting from Secunderabad/Hyderabad on June 3, priced from Rs 16,700. This itinerary covers significant sites like Puri, Konark, Baidyanath, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj.

Another notable offering is the 'Jyotirlinga With Dakshin Darshan Yatra' package, which commences on June 10. This 11-day pilgrimage tour, starting from stations like Indore and Ujjain, will take travelers to revered spiritual sites including Tirupati, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga shrine. Fares for this package begin at Rs 25,400 per person.

For those seeking to explore South India's spiritual landscape, the 'Divya Dakshin Yatra Manmad' package offers an 11-day journey starting July 27 from Manmad, covering destinations like Hampi, Mysore, Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, and Tirupati, with prices starting from Rs 19,770.

Furthermore, IRCTC is offering international pilgrimage tours, such as the 'Pashupatinath Nepal Darshan Yatra' starting June 24, which includes visits to Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan National Park, with packages starting from Rs 61,000.

Government's Budgetary Focus on Tourism Infrastructure and Skills

These developments in the travel sector occur against the backdrop of the Union Budget 2026-27, which has signaled a strategic shift towards positioning tourism as a year-round employment generator and a significant economic driver. The budget emphasized strengthening infrastructure, skilling the workforce, and enhancing heritage development. A key announcement was the plan to train 10,000 tourist guides nationwide, aiming to improve service standards and visitor experiences. The government also proposed the establishment of a National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid to create a unified national repository of tourism assets.

Additionally, the budget included a reduction in Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on overseas tour packages to a uniform 2%, a move intended to ease upfront costs for outbound Indian travelers and potentially boost international travel sentiment. This, coupled with a focus on developing high-speed rail corridors and improving domestic connectivity, aims to create a more dynamic and accessible travel ecosystem within India.

Looking ahead, the confluence of rising operational costs for airlines and the government's continued efforts to promote domestic and spiritual tourism through initiatives like the Bharat Gaurav trains will likely shape the travel landscape in India. Travelers may face higher airfares in the short term, but the expansion of affordable rail tourism options offers a viable alternative for exploring the country's rich cultural and religious heritage.
