Gothenburg, Sweden – India and Sweden have officially elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a significant deepening of ties between the two nations. The announcement came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sweden, where he held extensive talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Key Areas of Enhanced Cooperation
The newly established Strategic Partnership will focus on several key areas, including the green transition, defense, emerging technologies, and people-to-people connections. Both leaders expressed a strong commitment to fostering collaboration in these sectors, aiming to leverage their shared values and common interests. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the potential for cooperation in high-tech fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), health technology, and green mobility. A joint initiative to strengthen the "Sweden-India Technology and AI Corridor" is also planned, alongside the establishment of an India-Sweden Science and Technology Centre to bolster connections between the startup and research ecosystems of both countries.
Trade and Energy Discussions Take Center Stage
Trade and energy supplies were at the forefront of discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson. The leaders reviewed the progress of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), which came into force in October 2025. The visit also saw the announcement of three government-to-government Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in health cooperation, digital infrastructure, and space ties. Furthermore, at least 18 MoUs between businesses are expected, with a significant number focused on the energy sector. This includes ongoing discussions about increased investment from Norwegian pension funds and a long-term agreement with Norwegian energy major Equinor for LNG supply.
Commitment to Combating Terrorism and Global Stability
During a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for Sweden's support following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam last year. He affirmed that both nations would continue to fight against terrorism in all its forms and its supporters. The discussions also touched upon global conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Iran, and Gaza, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of peace and stability. The Prime Minister also received Sweden's highest honor, the 'Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross,' in recognition of his contributions to the India-Sweden relationship.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Shared Growth
The elevation to a Strategic Partnership is expected to pave the way for more robust collaboration and joint initiatives. Both nations are committed to working together on climate change and sustainability, with a focus on the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) initiative. India's advancements in green hydrogen, the circular economy, and sustainable infrastructure are seen as areas where collaboration with Sweden can yield significant mutual benefits. The partnership underscores a shared vision for innovation as a driver of growth and democracy as a fundamental strength.
