London Dynamo Road Race Crowns New Champions Amidst Challenging Conditions
STAPLEFIELD, UK – The cycling season continued with the London Dynamo Summer Road Race on Sunday, May 31, 2026, where Jack Rootkin-Gray and Emma Leslie emerged victorious in their respective elite categories. The event, held on a demanding course in Staplefield, saw riders battle not only each other but also the challenging weather conditions.
Rootkin-Gray's Solo Breakaway Seals Victory
In the men's elite race, Jack Rootkin-Gray showcased a remarkable display of endurance and tactical acumen. The 23-year-old, who is on a rebuilding path after a significant leg injury, launched a decisive attack on the final lap. Rootkin-Gray managed to break away from a select group of riders, holding off his pursuers to cross the finish line solo. This victory marks a significant milestone in his return to competitive cycling, building on his previous WorldTour seasons. The win extends his strong performance trajectory as he continues his recovery and aims for higher accolades. The decisive move came on the back of the course, just before a rolling down section. Rootkin-Gray, alongside another rider, created a gap that the rest of the field could not close. On the final climb, he made his winning move, attacking from the foot of the ascent and holding on for the win. Behind him, Danylo Riwnyj secured second place, retaining his South East regional road title, with Stuart Gilmour taking third.
Leslie's Dominant Debut Secures Women's Title
The women's race saw Emma Leslie of FTP–Fulfil The Potential Racing deliver a commanding performance in her debut for the team. Leslie, who signed with the team just 12 days prior, rode solo to victory, finishing over two minutes ahead of her nearest competitor. Her win also secured her the South East regional women's road title. The race was characterized by early attacks, with a leading group of six riders forming within the first lap. Leslie, initially with modest ambitions for the race, found herself in a strong position and capitalized on the opportunity. The challenging conditions and the demanding course thinned the field, allowing Leslie to establish and maintain her significant lead. Phoebe Roche, also of FTP–Fulfil The Potential Racing, finished second, winning the sprint from the chase group, and securing the regional championship. Lina Žydelyčtė of Dulwich Paragon CC came in third, also taking second in the regional championships. Leslie's victory is a promising start to her tenure with FTP–Fulfil The Potential Racing, a team that has been rebuilding with a strong intake of under-23 riders.
BUCS Road Race Championships Showcase Emerging Talent
Earlier in the week, on Sunday, May 24, the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Road Race Championships took place in west Devon. This event highlighted the prowess of university cyclists, with Loughborough University dominating both the open and women's categories. Sam Chaplin claimed the men's title, riding solo to victory, while Lily Martin replicated the feat in the women's race. The championships were held on a challenging 12-kilometer loop near Dartmoor, under exceptionally hot conditions that tested the riders' resilience. Chaplin extended his lead throughout the race, finishing approximately two minutes ahead of his closest rival, Daniel Parsonage, who secured second place. Joe Barnes rounded out the podium in third. In the women's race, Martin also rode solo, managing her lead despite a mechanical issue with her electronic shifting system in the final kilometers. The heat and the arduous course proved to be significant factors in both races, leading to solo victories and a testament to the athletes' determination.
