CALGARY – The federal government has given the green light to Enbridge Inc.'s $4-billion Sunrise natural gas pipeline expansion project in British Columbia, announced today, April 24, 2026. Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson stated that the approval of the Sunrise Expansion Program positions Canada as a secure energy superpower.
The project involves expanding Enbridge's Westcoast pipeline system by adding approximately 139 kilometres of new pipeline through 11 looping segments. This expansion is expected to increase the system's transportation capacity by up to 300 million cubic feet per day.
According to the government, the additional capacity will be crucial for meeting growing energy demands within British Columbia, supporting industries, and ensuring sufficient gas supply as new LNG export facilities, such as the net-zero Woodfibre LNG, come online.
Construction is slated to commence this summer. The project is anticipated to contribute over $3 billion to Canada's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by enhancing the nation's ability to meet natural gas demand from Asian markets. Furthermore, it is projected to generate more than $700 million in federal and provincial tax revenue and create approximately 2,500 jobs during peak construction, with a focus on including local Indigenous communities.
Minister Hodgson emphasized the government's commitment to efficiently moving major energy projects forward while upholding high environmental standards and ensuring robust Indigenous consultation. "A strong Canada is a Canada where major projects get built, new jobs are created and energy is secure and affordable for everyone," Hodgson stated.
The Sunrise Expansion Program is seen as a key component of Canada's trade diversification strategy, bolstering its role in the global energy market.
