Atlassian, the Australian software company behind popular products like Jira and Confluence, announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off around 10% of its global employees, which amounts to approximately 1,600 individuals. According to a Reuters report, the company stated this move is to redirect resources towards advancing its artificial intelligence capabilities and bolstering its enterprise sales efforts. This strategic shift will involve restructuring costs estimated up to $236 million. In conjunction with the layoffs, Atlassian has appointed two new Chief Technology Officers, both with a focus on AI, replacing the previous CTO. CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes acknowledged that while the company isn't aiming for AI to replace people, the evolving nature of technology necessitates a change in skill sets, making this pivot essential for future growth and competitiveness in the rapidly advancing AI landscape.
